Liebster award thingy!

So, I was recently nominated by The Traveller of Tyria and a while ago by Valourbörn. It was something that caught my attention, and I told myself “Hey, I should give it a try!” I can’t even remember why I never got around them, but with my recent nomination, I decided to dig in a little bit and answer both set of questions!

If you had to start the last article you wrote over, what would you do differently?

I believe that one of my biggest issues is that I don’t reread my blog posts enough to make sure my thoughts actually make sense in written form. I tend to just type everything that comes to my mind, post it in excitement and wonder if I’m actually making the point I want to make across. Last article is no exception.

What is your favorite MMO? Why?

I don’t even need to think this. Guild Wars 2 is definitely my favorite one. I haven’t really played a large variety of MMOs, but I like how GW2 doesn’t feel like a classic one. I love how easily I can exchange stuff among my characters and how guilds aren’t restricted per character. As an chronic altoholic (Looooove my alts) this is a plus because I’m not feeling a guild with my million characters.

Also, while playing with friends is fun, I like how I can just chill and do plenty of stuff by myself, or at the very least, helping at bosses and events without feeling pressured to be in a group if I want to be credited.

Do you feel the need to role-play your character when playing MMORPGs? Explain.

This is an interesting question. I have never role-played seriously but if I happen to find myself talking to a role-player, I’ll try my best to play along while I’m around. When I create a character, I Ddotend to create a whole background story for them. This is very important to me to be motivated to play and level them. I love sharing these background stories too.

What so you consider to be the biggest challenge when writing?

When it comes to blogs, sometimes I just can’t find the right words to express myself. With enough time, I can write something well thought, but sometimes I feel I can be somewhat limited merely because English is not my main language.

What do you use as your source of inspiration when you write?

I can’t really tell. There are simply times where I feel extremely motivated and inspired, and I try to make the most of those moments. I’m sure there are some tangible source of inspiration, like maybe video games, life events, or just random strings of thoughts that cross my overly active imagination.. yes, let’s go with that.

If you could be any character in a story, who would you be and why?

I don’t think there’s a character that makes me think “I want to be THAT guy.” I tend to empathize with the underdogs in stories. I can relate to most of them. I’d love to be a wizard of sorts if I were to be part of a story, though.

What is your favorite book of all time?

Favorite BOOK? You mean, like chosing only ONE? I don’t think I can do that! Here’s the sad part: My memory is horrible. I can read a full series and tell you I loved it, but I won’t be able to give you full details of the series. My favorite series are A Song of Ice and Wheel of Time. I love books with a lot of different characters’  point of views, and these series do just that.

Name one goal you hope to achieve this year.

Last year, my goal was to post 365 Guild Wars 2 screenshots for the GW2 365 project. This year I’d love to give my blog a more personal touch, and post maybe once a week about whatever happens between me and the gaming world. Sometimes I feel like blogging about personal(ish) stuff, thinking that it might help some people that could have passed through the same events I did, but that would require me to put more effort on my thoughts than what I’ve been doing lately.

Also, I love to write and make up stories, so I am hoping I could focus enough to finish one and maybe complete an RPG Maker game I started creating long ago.

Hey! Since this blog post is all about moi, why not talk about that?

This is the intro I made for it back when I started using Playstation 1’s RPG Maker. It had a lot of annoying rext sounds and spelling mistakes (I blame English not being my native language. Shhhh.)

This is the improved version on PC’s RPG Maker XP

And here is a demo playthrough run by the cool fellows from RPGM Magazine

Taking a glimpse at those videos motivate me to work on it, so if you get to see them and like them, let me know to feel more motivated!

What do others say is your best quality? Do you agree?

Many people say they admire my patience. And I can be very patient. But most of the time I’m just taking my time to process things, giving the impression I’m calmed when my mind is going out of control.

What inspired your online name?

My name has quite a bit of history. The Guarionex part is actually a not very common name used in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic and I REALLY like it. It’s the name of  tainan chief (tribe that lived in the Caribbean before it was “discovered” by Europeans). I started using it for many games, it was unlikely I’d find many people using it.

Unfortunately, since there ARE people in the Caribbean named Guarionex, I couldn’t use it in games where you can’t repeat names. I refused to add spaces to my name, or extra characters so I opted to try Asterix (I assure I wasn’t aware of the comic book character of the same name). In the end, Asterix was taken so I ended up naming my character Asterixion.

A rule I noticed about MMOs, is that you can have the best name ever, but people will still call you by the first 3 or 4 letters. I was lucky people started calling me Aster instead of Ast. (Seriously, I had a character named Bazooka jess, and people called her Baz for short instead of Jess)  I started to get used to the name Aster, and decided to add Guarionex because I still freaking love that name. The end.

Do you feel your writing inspires your readers?

I don’t think my writing inspires since I know I can be a bit deeper when I type my thoughts into a blog post.  At the very least I hope I can be slightly entertaining.

Ok, now to the non gaming questions!

If you could star in any commercial you wanted, what product would you want to advertise?

I think I’d be too embarrassed to appear into any kind of commercial! But for some reasons, potato chips come to my mind.

Grossest food in the whole world?

I’m a very picky eater, so I find almost everything gross. Still, as long as it’snot any kind of bean, I could be willing to give it a try. Beans.. ugh.

Your favourite kind of flooring?

Any kind that would allow me to safely slide across it if it was slippery. I haven’t done that since I was a kid… now I want to do it again!

If you could live in any building in the world (or even from a fictional world), what would it be?

I would definitely live in my Animal Crossing house. If only arranging furniture were as easy!

Would you rather lose sight, smell, taste, touch, or hearing?

Smell maybe? I’m the last person to detect strange/unpleasant smells already.

If you had enough money to make a world-record sized collection of something, what would you collect?

Nail clippers. I just want people to scratch their heads and wonder “Why…?”

What’s your state’s/province’s/country’s national food? Do you even like it?

Probably rice and pigeon peas or beans and pork? Remove the beans and I’ll eat it. I’ll probably remove the peas too.

The worst nightmare you can remember?

Oh, nothing traumatizing enough. Just  a bunch of starving people on top of a giant pillar. Every second, more people were dumped at the top of the pillar so at one point people began falling to  the dark, bottomless abyss while groaning weakly from hunger. I’m just glad I barely remember my dreams sometime.

If you could get a life-size portrait painted of anyone to put in your bedroom, who would it be?

That would be a bit weird! But if I happen to find one of Chris Hemsworth in my bedroom, I wouldn’t exactly take it out to wherever it came from.

Do you prefer to wash the dishes or dry them?

Wash, wash, wash! I just love playing with water. I always volunteered to do the dishes when I worked at a fast food restaurant. I always ended up soaked.

Would you rather lose your leg or force a family member to leave the country?

I’ll be a horrible person and banish a family member out the country. It’ll be for the greater good. But seriously, I have family members that don’t see me anymore as family so it’s not a hard decision.

Would you rather have a stranger do CPR on you or get third-degree burns?

Burns hurt. I choose you CPR stranger!

If you could have tea with any god or deity, who would it be?

Morgan Freeman.

The most annoying children’s song/movie that would make you want to die if you heard/saw it now?

Having a 4 year old niece, I think I’m already immune to annoying children songs and movies. I learned to let it go-OH GODS NO!

Would you rather be an identical twin with similar names (e.g. Tim and Kim) or have an unpronounceable name?

Well, I have a younger brother that looks nothing like me with a very different name from mine, and people still confuse us. Also, my last name is easy to pronounce, but looks like a very common last name. People assume I misspelled my last name so they spell it like the common version It’s annoying!. I almost got both!

Do you believe in ghosts or spirits? Do they scare you?

I come from a family who believes supernatural forces. In fact, I was told there was a buried urn in the backyard and there was a spirit or ghost guarding it. I was deathly afraid of looking out the window at night because of that. Nowdays, I don’t dismiss anything related to the supernatural, but I guess I won’t be scared of them unless I actually see one. Life will go on normally meanwhile.

Flip phone, slide phone, or touch phone?

I liked the flip phone because I tended to open it in peculiar way that confused everyone. (“Why do you open it like that?”) And while touch phones are awesome, I always dread of the possibility the screen breaks. With a flip phone I can at least still make calls like that.

Thanks to Traveler of Tyria and Alex for nominating at some point or another. I haven’t been active in blog post reading, so I don’t dare nominating anyone at the moment. I hope you enjoyed reading the rather long string of questions, even if it was just a little bit!

Random Encounters

I you are familiar with old role playing games (or RPG for short) then you know what I’m talking about. Our hero is minding their own business when their surrounding suddenly flashes, shakes or warps. The next second, our hero is facing off against wild creatures, or bandits. You can’t avoid them; you might run away from them, but they’ll find a way to get you again.

And while they might involve flashy magic attacks and powerful sword swings, these random encounters are likely to be less interesting than those that happen in real life. You know what I mean right? You are in minding your own business in the bus stop, with an awesome book paperback book in your hand, half reading, and half looking at the street hoping not to miss your bus. Then suddenly without any warning (because real life doesn’t provide flashes or vision warping) an elderly person (most of the time) starts talking to you. You politely smile and nod or answer while glancing at the book. But this person won’t let your desire to keep reading stop them from talking! Wait- is that just me?

The point is, we all have those moments. And most of mine used to happen at the bus stop or in the bus itself. Here is my most memorable random encounter so far.

2003 was an exciting moment for me, since I was transferring to a bigger college, and I couldn’t wait to see how different it was from the one I used to be. One of my biggest interests was on meeting new and different people. A week before classes started, I had to confirm my enrollment and pay for my courses, which took less time than I expected. Puerto Rico is such a small country that not many people need to stay on campus, so I went to the bus to go home. The bus service in Puerto Rico is also awful; it could be 40 minutes before the one I needed to take passed by (even when the sign says they pass every 20 minutes.)

So I’m sitting in a bench, simply waiting when a man sat next by me. He was all dirty, with a somewhat long beard. You could tell he was a homeless guy. Then he started talking. It didn’t take long for me to know his story. He used to be in love with another guy and they dated for a while. He gave him everything he wanted or needed. And he was much younger than him; somewhat around my age. (gulp) But something happened. (I don’t remember what. Hey- it’s been 8 years! I barely remember what I ate yesterday ok!? But I digress) Somehow they broke up, or the young man ran away and he lost everything. Then he said I had beautiful eyes (my eyes are black) and he asked if I had a boyfriend. I don’t know about any of you, but I believe that having a gay homeless person you met minutes ago, ask you to be his boyfriend is not a very common occurrence.

I’m sure that other people would react violently, yell or push the man away. Some even would call him names. I simply and politely told him that I had to go, since I missed my bus (Hey, I’m an easily distracted person, he did made me miss my bus) and went back to the campus. He told me that he wanted to see me again, but I just kept walking. A ran away from the random encounter.

I was worried, though. If you played RPGs you know that you are bound to meet again that pesky monster you hate so much while walking around the field or a dungeon. I had my escape button ready just in case. But I never saw that man again.

Dear diary…

July 21

I am wearing my best tie today. I have a job interview! Just when I was getting ready to go to another interview for a janitor position in a nearby city, I got a call for that other job. No experience was required, and they pay was definitely better, so I cancelled my interview for the janitor job. From what I can gather, the job consists of patrolling an touristic building. I’ll probably watch out for lost visitors or something like that. It should be a piece of cake.

July 22

I got the job! The interview was held in a huge, beautiful castle. An old man with a white mustache and a huge hat told me that all I had to do was patrol the garden area, and that I would be paid with gold coins for that. He said something about turtles too. Maybe I have to care for them too? That old man seemed to be a bit out of his senses, since he also mentioned something about royalty. I’ll get my uniform tomorrow and start right away! I’m kind of excited about all of this. What can go wrong?

July 23

I think I made a mistake by picking this job. I mean, what the hell was that? First, this caslte is not a touristic place. There IS a princess living in here! And she is constantly walking uo and down the corridors, virtually unprotected. And they don’t need people with experience to guard a princess!? Second, the uniform consists of a giant, white had with red dots, a blue, open vest, white trousers, brown shoes, and nothing else! I know we’re on still on summer, but can I at least have a decent shirt on? Third, the other guards seemed to be high all the time. They keep talking about mushrooms and flying turtles, or looking for “mini games” to play. This seems like easy money, but I don’t think my conscience would allow me to stay for too long. If something happens to the princess, I don’t want to feel guilty about it. I will still give it a chance and see how it works.

July 28

Today I saw the strangest thing! A man in a green tunic and a humanoid fox where fighting against the princess of the castle and a man with a mustache at the top of the castle. My duty might be the garden, but I had to do something! This is what I feared the most! The princess was in peril! I quickly ran up to the roof (darn castle doesn’t have an elevator) and took jumped in front of the guy in green. I was hoping not to get badly hurt, and get a raise in the process. Instead, I got suspended for a week for disrupting their match, disqualifying my boss and her good friend. It was like a freaking game! Apparently I’m the first guard in here to try to protect the princess in a long time. I heard some of them say there’s no point in trying to do so. ‘’The man in the blue overall always save the day’’ they say. So, why am I even working here!? I’m beginning to hate my job.

August 4

After spending a week with no pay, I came back to work. During the whole week, I considered quitting, and even had a resignation letter with me, in case something sudden happened. I decided I wasn’t going to get tangled in the affairs of a princess that’s prone to kidnapping (The stories of her kidnappings are legendary here! I wonder how exaggerated they are…) I didn’t get the chance to present my resignation letter, though. I got ran over by a monkey in a go kart and a giant turtle with spikes. The giant turtle complained that I disrupted their friendly race, and I got a memo for it. It turns out that the princess lets some Grand Prix races in her very own garden. Yep, the ones I patrolled, they forgot to mention that little detail in my contract. I think I wasn’t suspended since I’ll have to spend a few days at the hospital. My mind is set, though. I will quit as soon as I get out of here.

August 8

I got out of the hospital yesterday, and I’m back at the castle. I talked to the old man to set up an appointment with the boss later today. I really want to tell her how I’m feeling about this job before quitting. I’ll… try to be a gentleman and not be harsh. Maybe I’ll be able to sort everything out and won’t have to quit. I’m also feeling uneasy. I’ve been having this feeling there is something watching me when I turn my back. Could it be ghosts? At this point, I don’t know what to think…

August 9

I quit. I can’t take this anymore. I want to leave this freaking place. But I can’t. The giant spiked turtle that ran over me, and seemed to come so often to play sports with the princess just sealed her in a fresco, along with me and another guard. What kind of freak plays tennis with the creature that wants her kingdom!?!? And how come the hundred of guards outside didn’t do anything to stop this? Now we have to wait for the so famous jumping man to rescue us from this prison.
Oh, but I have learned my lesson. I thought I could make some easy money out this job, but a little research would have opened my eyes. I had the option of taking this ‘’easy’’ job or a lowly, but honest job as a janitor in that other town. I made the wrong decision, but I will learn from this mistake.

September 17

It’s been a week since I got released from that cursed fresco painting. I quit soon after that. I think I made the right decision. The princess went on some vacations and vanished, unsurprisingly. Whatever, it has nothing to do with me now. All I want is a quiet, honest and peaceful job. I don’ think I can take any more nasty surprises. I got a call a few days ago about the janitor position I turned down a while ago. It turns out that the one they hired has been acting oddly, and seems to be sick, so they are hiring another one to help do some cleaning duties in the city’s hospital. This time I did some research and it’s a lovely place. The hospital is to the north of the city and it’s close to a park and a clock tower. I’ll start working there on September 22. That day will be very important to me, I just know it. Well, this is my last entry for another while, but I’ll make sure to come back and write some more when I’m officially installed in Raccoon City’s General Hospital. But it’ll be only for a week. What can seriously go wrong by then?

Life is a drag…

I’d like to take this opportunity to talk about a very serious matter; one that I think I should address right now, and that is…

Cross-dressing in video games.

Yay for slightly misleading blog titles!
I can’t say that I have a vast experience in MMO, or mass multiplayer online games. The only one I’ve played is Phantasy Star Online/Universe, so I can only talk about those games. Now, I like playing as girls in games. Why? I don’t know. I usually go for the ladies or the smallest.  I’m not looking for sexiness in them. Maybe I just don’t like using the muscle heads type of guys.
Playing as a girl in PSO was… an interesting experience, to say the least. First, people assumed I was a girl right from the start and started hitting on me. That made me think: Do the general gaming population assume that the avatar must look exactly like their player?
At this point, the cross dresser has 2 options: Play along with it and see what he can get, or tell them the truth. And I just can’t do the first one. Not after somebody started talking about how pretty the stars were while we were alone in a lobby. And the second option usually bring “Ewww r u gay?” comments. Let me tell you, if you felt deceived by a green haired elf looking girl named Jay, then you are delusional. My third option was to not let them get any wrong idea. My convos started like this “Hi, I’m Jay. I’m a drag-queen”
That… didn’t go too well either.
My other option? I wanted a really unique character, and Jay was the typical girl hunter in shorts, so I made a human mage (FOMarl for the PSO players). She was kind of short and *gasps* chubby. She was my favorite character. People stopped hitting on me and started making fun of me. (I never thought I would be compared to Rosie O’ Donell in a game) But Jess didn’t care (I started named my character with one syllable names starting with J after this) they came back to her. I have a feeling that Jess being the healer and the buffer played a big part in that tho…

She is also very confident of herself, don't you think?

And now, the weirdest thing I have said in a while:

Things I learned as an in-game latin cross dresser

  • If you are using a female avatar, guys will think you are a girl
  • If people think you are a girl, they will think you will be hot
  • If they don’t think you are a girl, they think you are old fat man trying to attract boys
  • If you are using a chubby female avatar, they will simply make fun of you.
  • If they don’t find out you are a guy, they will hit on you
  • If they do find out you are a guy, they probably call you gay.
  • If they don’t think you are gay, they think you are an opportunist trying to rob guys with your… charm?
  • Some guys don’t mind if you hit on them if it’s all in good RP fun, and they know it.
  • It’s funny when in good RP fun, you’re hitting on someone and another person tells on you.
  • ‘Oh, he’s not a girl”
    “I know”
    *awkward silence*
(Wait, how do I know this you ask? I just know ~_^)

  • Making a boys in drag alliance can be fun.
  • It would probably be more fun if it had more than 2 members, so we could like about how “Life’s such a drag”

Jess and her partner in crime

And the following are not related to cross-dressing but they were as important to me as the previous one:

  • If you type in Spanish, people will think you are Mexican
  • If they think you are Mexican, they will also think you don’t understand a bit of English
  • Most people can only type “Yo quiero Taco Bell” Donde estan mis pantalones?” and “La migra!”
  • People that jump late on a Spanish speaking group might feel offended if we don’t speak English
  • Sometimes, they think we don’t know that they are insulting us in English when in fact, they don’t know that we know and are insulting them back in Spanish, hoping they don’t know.
  • The opposite happens too.
  • I can join in the fun on both ways, if I wanted. =D
  • Sometimes, Japanese talking people think we don’t know they are insulting us, and in fact, we have no idea, so we keep talking blissfully in English or Spanish.

So yeah. MMORPGs are fun. And I can only imagine it only improves on bigger scaled, open worlds. I’m looking forward to my next cross-dressing experiences as lovelies Jess and Jay. And Jo. And Jinx. And…
